Episode #2 Recorded 2/26/2011

The second episode of Correlations went really well.  I was joined again by Delia Shargel, and this time we also had good friends Chad Harris and Jessica Garfield Kaberra rounding out the team.  We're starting to find our groove, and this time we settled into what is likely to be the more regular format.  There are two segments that are each about an hour and 10 minutes long.  In the first segment we all share our favorite astrological correlations from the recent weeks, with many fine examples.  Chad focuses in on the revolution in Tunisia, Jessica brings in the music of Michael Franti and the comedy of Lucille Ball, Delia brings in the chart of a Nazi hunter, and I bring in a song from Aimee Mann and also look at the chart of actor James Franco.  In the second segment, "Honoring the Gods," we focus on two archetypes that were in the sky at the time of the recording, the Mars-Neptune combination (we discuss the chart for the founder of Aikido as well as the chart of Dan Millman), and the Moon-Pluto combo (looking at Mary Tyler Moore's chart and the Hindu "hugging saint" Ammachi's chart).  Below, I break down the discussion so that you can go exactly to any part of the recording that you are most interested in.  There are also copies of most of the charts that we discussed, several YouTube clips, as well as outside links to articles discussed.

Please click here on the highlighted text to go directly to the recording.

You can also download the mp3 file directly to your computer by clicking on this highlighted text.  It will take you to the server that is hosting the sound-file.  There are different options for downloading the file, but on the left side of the page you will see a window that says "Listen to Audio," and in the lower half of that window it says "play/download."  Click on the blue link here that says "VBR ZIP"  This should download a compressed version of the mp3 file.  After it downloads it should open into an mp3 file that you can listen to with iTunes.  You can also download what is called an "Ogg" file, and this is a smaller file, but you will need compatible software.  I am working on figuring out how to have the podcast available for download through iTunes, but it may take me a while to master the technology.

Segment One

00:00-  Introductions and overview

04:40-  Chad discusses the situation in the Middle East, focusing on the revolution in Tunisia, and the chart of Mohamed Bouazizi (Chart and link to 60 minutes piece on Tunisia below)

18:15- Jessica brings in the chart of artist Michael Franti, and plays a piece of music representative of his Sun-Mars conjunction: "Hey World" (Chart and YouTube video below)

28:50- I bring in a piece of music by the artist Aimee Mann, her song "Wise Up," that was featured in Paul Thomas Anderson's film "Magnolia."  We watch the scene from the film that featured this song, and discuss her chart.  If you haven't seen Magnolia you may want to skip this part of the podcast, and maybe listen to the song on it's own.  Below I have embedded a YouTube video of the scene from the film, and another version that just has the song with the lyrics.  Charts for Mann and Anderson are also below.

42:50- Delia brings in the chart of Tuviah Friedman (chart below), famous Nazi Hunter, and we discuss his natal Saturn square Pluto aspect.  We explore the nature of the Shadow and the potential for either being possessed by it or facing and integrating it.

52:10-  Jessica brings in the chart of her beloved Lucille Ball.  We discuss her natal Mars-Saturn square Sun natal aspect.  Ball's chart and a representative example from her show are below.

57:30-   I discuss an article I read about the actor James Franco which describes how he is currently enrolled in four different graduate school programs, and I link this to his natal Mercury-Pluto opposition. Franco's chart and a link to the article are below.

Segment Two: "Honoring The Gods"

1:12:15- Introduction and then focus on Mars-Neptune archetype.  I give an overview description of the combination, and then we go into the example of Morihei Ueshiba, the founder of Aikido.  We look at a video clip (embedded below) of Ueshiba performing his Aikido moves.  We also discuss the transit he had at the time of his first very powerful spiritual experience that lead to the birth of this new approach to martial arts (and to also to life in general).

1:22:37- Chad, Jessica, and Delia share their thoughts on the Mars-Neptune archetype.  I then briefly bring in the chart of Dan Millman, the author of "Way of the Peaceful Warrior," who, like Ueshiba, also has Mars square Neptune.

1:42:10- We start to explore the Moon-Pluto archetype.  We discuss this combination on a number of levels, looking at both it's highest potential as well as its shadow side.  We bring in the specific examples of the Hindu "hugging saint" Ammachi, and Mary Tyler Moore (charts below).

2:11:00- The Mary Tyler Moore example with a clip from the film "Ordinary People."  This clip, as well as an interview with Moore discussing the role, are embedded below.

2:20:00- I make a prediction about the Oscars.

Episode #1 Recorded 2/13/2011

Welcome to the first episode of Correlations: The Archetypal Astrology Podcast!  I'm very excited to be moving forward with this new venture.  I have been wanting to do an astrology podcast for a long time now, but I finally got organized with the technology, and I am delighted to be able to post this first episode.  Here on this blog, for each episode I will post a description of who participated, the topics that were discussed, and the approximate time that each new topic was explored, so if you don't have time to listen to the entire podcast, you will be able to go directly to what you want to listen to.

This first episode came together very spontaneously, so forgive me if it is less organized and a little rough around the edges.  This first episode really functions as a kind of general introduction to this particular approach to astrology, and it has a more personal quality, with both me and my friend Delia Shargel sharing the history of how we came to astrology.

I think the general format that I intend for future episodes is to have three segments, in the first segment there will be general discussion of whatever astrological correlations are most on our minds at the time of the recording.  This will likely involve discussing whatever major news stories that are happening and their astrological correlates, and also sharing whatever other favorite correlations we happen to be "geeking out" about in the moment.  The second segment will vary from week to week, but it will generally be a dialogue on some astrological topic that we are interested in.  Hopefully there will also be listener feedback, and the audience will suggest topics of discussion.  This second segment may also be an interview whenever I can find another passionate archetypal astrologer who is available.  The third segment I'm thinking of calling "Honoring the Gods," and will be an opportunity for anyone who is participating in the podcast to go into their chart database to bring a favorite chart correlation that mirrors something that is in the sky for the time of the recording.  For example, in this first podcast, given that there was a Venus-Pluto conjunction in the sky at the time of the recording, we discussed a couple of famous people who are born with Venus-Pluto hard-aspects.  This first podcast didn't really stick to the format (Uranus wouldn't let us), so let me now outline what did actually transpire.  You can go directly to the recording (and listen to the podcast in an open browser window) by clicking on the highlighted text here.  Enjoy!

There are two segments separated by a break.  I think I may have over-dominated the discussion in the first segment (sorry Delia!), but things became more balanced by the time we began the second segment. The first segment is about 45 minutes, and the second is about an hour and 15 minutes long.

First Segment-  Delia and I discuss our history of coming into astrology together when we took our first class with Rick Tarnas and Stan Grof back in January of 1995.

:14 mins-  We explore how Stan Grof's four perinatal matrices are connected archetypally to the four outer planets, and how this relates to the liberating birth moment happening in Egypt.

:20 mins-  A discussion about the timing of the podcast using astrology, and the difference between trying to use astrology in a controlling way versus a more surrendered approach.

:34 mins-  Delia introduces herself more completely, and we discuss the recent history of developments in our school of astrology since Rick Tarnas published Cosmos and Psyche in 2006.

:41 mins-  We start to explore what is unique about this school of Archetypal Astrology.  Break.

:46 mins- Second Segment:  We start back with more discussion of the collective chart for the first podcast, with the stellium in Aquarius, the strong Neptune alignments, and Sun trine Moon.  Discussion of the nature of trines versus squares. Brief discussion of Andrew Harvey as an example of someone with really nice trines to Neptune (see chart and YouTube video example below).  More discussion about the unique nature of this school of Astrology.  Sun trine Moon versus Sun square Moon.

1:02- Discussion of how hard aspects can be repressed/projected or integrated.  Delia talks about how you can "develop it, or marry it."

1:15- Discussion of the Keplerian elegance of this approach to astrology, and the value of "keeping it simple," and focusing on just capturing "the big fish" of a chart. Becoming more of a mindful participant in our own archetypal makeup. The challenges of the natal chart and transits can be seen as the "perfect"opportunity for spiritual growth.  We discuss the experiential embodied emphasis in this approach to astrology. Discussion of the "Neptune support group" happening here in San Francisco.

1:38- "Honoring the Gods" discussion of two famous people with Venus-Pluto hard aspects:  Anais Nin (The french literary figure), and Steve Irwin, "The Crocodile Hunter."  (See charts and YouTube examples below).

One correction:  I refer to "Saturday Night Live" having it's first episode under a Jupiter-Uranus conjunction.  It was actually a Jupiter-Uranus opposition.  Saturday Night Live premiered on October 11th 1975 under the Jupiter-Uranus opposition that was within orb from the second half of 1975 until early 1977.

Exact birth data from B.C.

Birth time from personal communication.

Here's a great example of Andrew Harvey giving a public talk with his typical "trines to Neptune" ease of access to divine inspiration.  He tells a wonderful story of getting to interview the Dalai Lama on the day he received the Nobel peace prize.

Birth Data rated AA in astrodata bank.  From B.C.
Some quotes by Anaïs Nin:
"Eroticism is one of the basic means of self-knowledge, as indispensable as poetry."
"We don't have a language for the senses. Feelings are images, sensations are like musical sounds."
"The body is an instrument which only gives off music when it is used as a body. Always an orchestra, and just as music traverses walls, so sensuality traverses the body and reaches up to ecstasy."

Birth Data is rated "dirty data" by astrodatabank, but this is an approximate time that Steve Irwin reported to an astrologer.

Steve Irwin in typical Venus-Pluto "love of animals archetype" mode.  Wombat!
